Get ready to flex: Samira is coming to 2XKO on October 27, and she's bringing her signature blend of style, sass, and explosive combos. As a thrill-seeking mercenary who lives for the next adrenaline rush, Samira is a natural fit for a fighting game—especially one that celebrates creative expression like 2XKO. But carving out a unique space for her in a roster that already features gun-toting fighters and a big-weapon-wielding Noxian was no easy task. We sat down with designer MarlinPie, producer Persia, and game analyst ApologyMan to uncover how Samira was brought to life, what kind of players will gravitate toward her, and how to stunt on your opponents in your next bracket.

From League to 2XKO: The Making of Samira

Samira's development began in earnest after Akali's release. Her original League design was rooted in fast, combo-based action, making her a natural fit for a fighting game. The team started by asking: what does it mean to feel 'stylish'? MarlinPie initially envisioned a kit with dozens of moves, but as development progressed, that ambitious pool was trimmed down to a tighter, more focused set that powers up as Samira generates Style. With that limit in place, the artists went all out to convey her flash and extravagance. 'With Akali, we built so many different animations, but with Samira, we relied on VFX and audio to convey power in a really beautiful way,' says Persia. 'She ended up looking so distinct, and that's really down to her lighting and VFX.' Keep an eye out for the way shadow and light make her muzzle flashes pop off the screen.

Style and Sauce: Rewarding Creative Routing

Samira's design actively encourages players to mix up their combos. Her Style Gauge incentivizes weaving in specials from across her kit, rather than sticking to the same bread-and-butter routes. 'Style in fighting games often implies doing extra, redundant stuff you didn't have to do just to beat the opponent,' MarlinPie explains. 'Samira rewards all of that. If 100 humans play Samira, they'll all have very different ways that they prefer to play her.' Her coin taunt, executed with a triple-down input, epitomizes this philosophy. Why settle for a normal OTG when you can pick up your opponent with a tricky coin toss? 'One thing I love about Samira is she's bringing the fun of disrespect back,' Persia quips. 'She's confident, cocky—she brings that energy and that aura.'

Of course, there were limits. For a while, her S-rank-empowered Stylish Ultimate cost no meter, which turned her into a nonstop super-fest. 'We tried to make it work, but it… it just doesn't work. No,' ApologyMan recalls with a hint of playtesting trauma.

Stay Free: Open-Ended Kit, Assist Trade-Offs

Samira's kit is uniquely open-ended, even for 2XKO's freeform combo system. Her specials cancel into one another, giving her a wealth of options when she's on point. 'One of the most fun things about her is how you use the S1 moves for offense,' ApologyMan says with an evil glint. 'Once you get the opponent blocking, you're like: All right, am I going to do S1 into S1? Am I going to do the overhead? Am I going to do back S1? Can I reset pressure with a normal? I might charge back S2 and get advantage on block. How many special cancels do I have left?' That personal carry potential comes at a cost: her Assist game is less effective. 'I think of this character as similar to an ADC in League if anything,' MarlinPie muses. 'Samira thinks of 2XKO fights as her stage, and she is the main character of the show. Not necessarily a super overtuned character, but a character that excels because of her own power, with fewer tools to support others.'

Despite MarlinPie's mad scientist reputation, Samira is actually designed to be accessible. 'I've been trying to dispel this narrative,' he laughs. 'Samira is kind of my final wishlist item: a champ that looks ridiculously technical, but is secretly super accessible for everyone to pick up and feel stylish playing.'

Closing Thoughts

W bleed! Evo France was an incredible tournament, and the 2X community showed up in force to support the players—even when every French player knocked each other out on the losers side. With two Majors each for Hikari and bleed, surely they'll settle it all at Battle Coliseum, right? RIGHT?
