Since its launch in 2009, League of Legends has evolved dramatically, with new champions, reworks, items, and modes constantly reshaping the battlefield. But as Riot Games looks to the future, they’ve heard a chorus of players longing for the past—remembering the chaos of AP Master Yi, the terror of 95% ban rate Kassadin, or the quirky experimentation of Bankplank. In response, Riot is introducing League Classic, a new gameplay experience that blends the greatest hits of early League with modern quality-of-life improvements.

What Is League Classic?

League Classic is not a time capsule of a single patch or season. Instead, it’s a curated collection of the most beloved elements from League’s early years, anchored in Season 3 but drawing from a range of seasons. This means you’ll find iconic items like Atma’s Impaler and Frozen Mallet, pre-rework champion kits, and even forgotten summoner spells like Fortify. But there’s one hard rule: no Yasuos allowed. Riot aims to recreate the slower, more strategic combat pacing of the era, where missiles and dashes were slower, stuns were plentiful, and every spell cost more but hit harder.

The Classic Map and Gameplay Changes

The Classic Map is a faithful recreation of early Summoner’s Rift, complete with wraith camps, buffs that have their little friends again, and monsters that hit harder and respawn faster. Riot has made targeted improvements to readability—updating lighting, shadows, and textures—to ensure high-octane fights remain clear. The result is a battlefield that feels familiar but polished, encouraging strategic engagement over fast-paced mobility.

Champions, Runes, and Masteries: A Streamlined Roster

League Classic launches with 60 champions: the original 40 plus 20 hand-selected from the 2009-2013 era. More will be added over time, but this focused roster makes it easy for returning players to jump back in without reading 100+ ability descriptions. If you already own a champion, you’ll have access in Classic; otherwise, unlock them through Classic Levels, the Shop, or the free rotation.

Runes and Masteries are back, simplified and faster to unlock. All runes are Tier 3 baseline, and you’ll get three rune pages to start, with more available through Classic Levels or IP (which returns for Classic). Masteries unlock fully by Classic Level 4. Forgot to set your pages? No problem—a default page ensures you’re never underpowered, just slightly suboptimal.

Progression and Social Play

League Classic focuses on fun with friends, not ranked grind. The main PvP queue is draft pick, with Co-op vs AI and custom games for experimentation. A new progression system, Summoner’s Journey, kicks in at Classic Level 10, taking players from Salt to Legend—a prestigious tier only a single-digit percentage of players will reach. Champ select also gets a modern touch with a positional preference system to avoid the chaos of early role-calling.

Cosmetics, Passes, and Skins

Classic Levels are a free progression track rewarding Masteries, Runes, IP, BE, and cosmetics like the Rustier Blitzcrank skin. Seasonal Classic Passes, similar to Battle Passes, offer free and paid tracks with IP, emotes, titles, and Classic Skins—which revert champion visuals to their 2009-2013 looks. Classic Skin Tokens, earned through passes or the Shop, let you unlock these nostalgic skins. Many existing skins will be available at launch, with more added over time. Classic Chromas inject extra 2009 flair, and Portraits are also part of the cosmetic lineup.

Riot Games emphasizes that League Classic is about reliving the past while creating new memories. Whether you’re chasing the glory of full crit Gangplank or just want to experiment with Atmogs, Classic offers a space for fun, strategy, and a touch of nostalgia.
