Riot Games has outlined a midscope update for Mel, the newest mage to join the League of Legends roster, aimed at curbing the frustration her Rebuttal [W] reflect mechanic causes opponents. The changes, detailed by Gameplay Designer Kevin "Captain Gameplay" Huang, will remove the reflect entirely and redistribute power into her scaling and multi-target potential. The rework is scheduled to hit live servers in Patch 26.22.
The Problem with Rebuttal
When Mel launched, her [W] reflect was intended to be a bold new mechanic that challenged opponents to adapt their play. For a while, it seemed to work: after the usual new champion ban spike, Mel settled at a 48-49% win rate with a healthy pick rate, suggesting players found her powerful but not overwhelmingly frustrating. However, as elite and pro players began optimizing her kit, it became impossible to balance her power without tipping opponent frustration over the edge. By mid-year, her win rate had dropped to 45-47% and her play rate had halved, signaling that players no longer felt they could overcome her at a reasonable win rate.
Riot experimented with several iterations to preserve the reflect, including a shorter-range version and a version where Mel stole the first missile to hit her, but none struck the right balance. Ultimately, the team concluded that any reflect not occupying her Ultimate slot would either remain too frustrating for opponents or be undesirable for Mel players. Since her current Ultimate, Golden Eclipse, is already a core part of her combat pattern, demoting it to a basic ability was not an option.
New Rebuttal [W]
The new Rebuttal will still destroy enemy projectiles and retaliate, but it will no longer reflect abilities back at opponents. Instead, it releases a projectile-destroying nova that shields and grants move speed to Mel and her allies, then retaliates with a small amount of damage. This change is expected to be far less frustrating to play against while still providing a satisfying defensive tool. Because the new [W] is often less impactful than the live version, it also frees up power budget for the rest of her kit.
Kit Adjustments and Scaling
Alongside the [W] change, Riot is making several adjustments to smooth out Mel's power curve. The team identified that Mel struggles to apply more than one rotation of Searing Brilliance stacks, often limiting her to a single kill per fight. Additionally, too much of her power is concentrated in the early game, making her a sharp counter to certain champions in lane but weak in team fights later. The rework addresses this by:
- Reducing early game durability and passive damage in favor of scaling health and armor.
- Making [Q] slightly slower and shifting damage from the initial explosion to subsequent hits, making it more fair to play against in lane.
- Adjusting [E]'s root duration to be shorter against nearby enemies and longer against distant ones, rewarding long-range skill shots while increasing vulnerability in close-range matchups.
- Empowering her ability to stack Searing Brilliance by giving [Q] a flat cooldown refund when it hits at least one enemy champion.
- Granting her Ultimate more cooldown reduction scaling with ability level, making it a more reliable payoff for stacked passive.
These changes aim to shift Mel's power from a lane bully who counters specific champions into a scaling mage who can contribute more meaningfully in team fights. The midscope update is set to go live in Patch 26.22, and Riot is eager to see how players adapt to the new playstyle.
